The Four Strategies

The Ten Rules of Community Organizing

Defining an Action Strategy

There are four fundamental strategies available to neighborhood groups to address community problems: community organizing, advocacy, service delivery or development. There is no right or wrong strategy - each organization has to choose among them constantly. Each group should specialize - the skills needed to do a good job in one are seldom those needed for another. Sometimes, groups use a combination of strategies. What is important here is that you know what you're doing - that the method matches the strategy you've chosen and they both match the mission the group has adopted. This article will focus on defining and developing the ideas behind community organizing.

Community organizing is characterized by the mobilizing of volunteers. Staff roles are limited to helping volunteers become effective, to guiding the learning of leaders through the process, and to helping create the mechanism for the group to advocate on their own behalf. Community organizing almost always includes confrontation of some sort. The people who want something get themselves together to ask for it, often the people who could give them what they want get jumpy. Community organizing strategies include meeting with corporate or government decision makers to hold them accountable for their actions, designing programs for others (not the group) to implement that meet the needs of the community, and aggressive group action to block negative developments or behaviors (highway construction that leads to neighborhood destruction, etc.).

Advocacy and Service Delivery are both characterized by doing FOR people. Often professionals like lawyers or social workers will attack a problem on behalf of those perceived as unable to speak for themselves. Job referral services, social work, training for job readiness, homeownership counseling, business plan preparation training - these are methods which fit into the Advocacy or Service Delivery strategy.

Development is a strategy that gets the group directly into the business of delivering a physical product. Generally, groups select a development strategy because the normal course of events is not meeting the areas needs. The profit motive either does not bring private developers into the area - they can't make enough money - or it brings them in to do the wrong thing - they are converting moderate cost rental units into yuppie condos. Development could mean housing or commercial or even industrial development. Development methods require, like the other two strategies, particular skills. Many groups have struggled to achieve good results in housing development with staff whose training, experience and interests are in community organizing, causing pain and suffering for the group and the staff. This is unfair. If we understand the distinction between the strategies, we can see the different resources needed for the methods that fit within them.

Also note that any parameterized statement here will not work in offline mode - INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE statements which refer to literal values would need to render inline expressions. For simple use cases, the inline_literal() function can be used for rudimentary quoting of string values. For “bulk” inserts, consider using Charles Albert Womens Tribal Bohemian Slip On Sandal Slide Black Multi sjLAy3

For example, to emit an UPDATE statement which is equally compatible with both online and offline mode:

Note above we also used the SQLAlchemy sqlalchemy.sql.expression.table() and sqlalchemy.sql.expression.column() constructs to make a brief, ad-hoc table construct just for our UPDATE statement. A full Meindl womens Journey Lady Mid GTX anthracite/azure Dark Grey lWNYN4izr
construct of course works perfectly fine as well, though note it’s a recommended practice to at least ensure the definition of a table is self-contained within the migration script, rather than imported from a module that may break compatibility with older migrations.

Indicate a string name that has already had a naming convention applied to it.

This feature combines with the SQLAlchemy naming_convention feature to disambiguate constraint names that have already had naming conventions applied to them, versus those that have not. This is necessary in the case that the "%(constraint_name)s" token is used within a naming convention, so that it can be identified that this particular name should remain fixed.

If the Tods Mens Suede Driver Navy pdEjrGnBUl
is used on a constraint, the naming convention will not take effect:

Above, the CHECK constraint generated will have the name ck_bool_t_x regardless of whether or not a naming convention is in use.

Alternatively, if a naming convention is in use, and ‘f’ is not used, names will be converted along conventions. If the target_metadata contains the naming convention {"ck": "ck_bool_%(table_name)s_%(constraint_name)s"} , then the output of the following:

op.add_column(‘t’, ‘x’, Boolean(name=’x’))

will be:

The function is rendered in the output of autogenerate when a particular constraint name is already converted, for SQLAlchemy version 0.9.4 and greater only . Even though naming_convention was introduced in 0.9.2, the string disambiguation service is new as of 0.9.4.

0.9.4 and greater only

New in version 0.6.4.

Return the current ‘bind’.

[3] John Chernoff (1979, p. 94) provides a lovely description of how rhythmic organization pervades the west African culture of Ghana. In a customs office, Chernoff had to wait while a clerk typed copies of invoices. "Using the capitalization shift key with his little fingers to pop in accents between words, [the clerk] beat out fantastic rhythms. Even when he looked at the rough copies to find his next sentence, he continued his rhythms on the shift key. He finished up each form with a splendid flourish on the date and port of entry. ... I realized that I was in a good country to study drumming." Return to text.

[4] A survey of European folksongs indicates that melodies in major keys are roughly twice as common as melodies in minor keys. This suggests that even the choice of initial schema may be sensitive to the frequency of occurrence of various contexts. Return to text.

[5] The term "secondary affect" is used to designate what we have called here the "outcome response". Return to text.

[7] Recall that the imaginative response relates to the activity of contemplating different future states. There is a case to be made that the vast majority of listening is done teleologically . That is, music listening is dominated by a sense of inevitability, where the listener is unable to entertain alternative ways in which the music might unfold. When I became active as a composer, I was amazed that it was possible to listen to well-known compositions with a composer's sense of "choices". That is, one could listen to a composer like Beethoven with a sense that certain choices could have been different: Beethoven might have added another variation of the current theme, or brought back and theme used earlier, or that a section of the development might have been shortened. In other words, the experience of composing made it possible to listen without the sense that the music is inevitably the way it is, and not some other way.

In ordinary music listening, it is very likely that the imaginative response is largely absent or muted. This is obviously a convenient point-of-view, since attempting to analyze the non-teleological or imaginative component to listening would be extremely daunting. Return to text.

When occurring in a position of closure, the tonic is stable and evokes a pleasant experience. (So too, but to a lesser degree, do the mediant and dominant pitches.) Whatever else one may say, the tonic is a familiar pitch at the ends of musical passages.
